Celebrate World Toilet Day 2014 with the Thank You Toilet Contest!


Everyone deserves a safe place to “go”.

Did you know that the advent of the toilet has saved more lives than any other invention in history? That’s right – more than seat belts, vaccinations or any medical device, modern sanitation has improved women’s equality, living conditions, health and even economies!

Last year, we awarded Williamsburg Elementary School in Williamsburg, Ohio with 10 brand new toilets to replace their outdated facilities which hadn’t been changed in decades! We also awarded organizations like the Family Bridge Homeless Shelter, Winfield Area Habitat for Humanity, and the Natchez Festival of Music with new, water-efficient toilets and funds towards the installation.

Congratulations to Our House Residential Job Training Program for Youth in Brookeville, Maryland which received multiple nominations and captivated our panel of Judges with their moving mission to equip abandoned, abused, homeless, and orphaned teenage boys with carpentry skills, workforce readiness, and GED preparation. Here are their nominations!


Congratulations! Our House will be receiving 7 toilets and 3 urinals for their new training center, along with $2,000 USD from American Standard to use towards installation. Thank you to all who submitted a nomination to this year’s contest and shared your passion for providing a deserving organization or individual with new toilets. 

This year, we’re once again making an ode to the commode by awarding a deserving organization or individual with Thank You Toilets & $200 USD per toilet (to be used towards installation) for their home, school or other facility. The winner will be announced on World Toilet Day, November 19th!

How can you make a nomination?

From now until November 14th, 2014, nominate one deserving group or individual to receive a toilet or toilets (up to 10) of their choice from American Standard by uploading a photo of their current bathroom facilities to Instagram. Be sure to include the following caption (in 50 words or less):

  • How the nominee has had a positive impact on others on a personal/community level;
  • Why the nominee would benefit from and is deserving of receiving up to a maximum of 10 new toilets (i.e. outdated facilities which need renovating, etc.)

Don’t forget to include the hashtag “#ThankYouToiletContest” and tag American Standard at “@American_Standard” in your caption to make it official! Don’t have an Instagram account? You can still enter by sending us your photo and caption to thankyoutoilet@americanstandard.com. (see official rules for more details)

A panel of judges from American Standard will evaluate each submission using the criteria listed above. The winning organization, group or individual will be announced on World Toilet Day, November 19th, 2014! No purchase is necessary. “Thank You Toilet” Program Instagram Contest

Official Rules


Eligibility: The American Standard “Thank You Toilet” Contest (“Contest”) is open to legal residents of the (50) United States, the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) 18 years of age or older, and also to (a) bona fide charitable organizations holding valid tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) or 501(a)(9) of the IRS Code, or are comparably federally registered non-profit organizations in Canada,  and (b) K-12 public schools in the U.S. or Canada (collectively, “Nominees”).

However, the following organizations and individuals are excluded from being Nominees: (i) organizations that practice discrimination by race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, age or national origin; (ii) organizations that serve only their own memberships (such as those types of fraternal organizations, pageants, labor organizations or religious groups that do not provide services to persons who are not members (or relatives) of the particular group); (iii) organizations affiliated with political parties, political candidates, lobbyist activities, political publications or political advertising.  Without limiting the foregoing, Sponsor (defined below) reserves the right, in its absolute discretion, to exclude any organization Sponsor determines is inappropriate for any reason; and (iv) individuals who are employees, officers & directors of AS America, Inc., d/b/a American Standard Brands (“Sponsor”) & its parent, subsidiaries, affiliates, agents, representatives, retailers, distributors, advertising & promotion agencies (collectively, the “Released Parties”) &  their immediate families (parents, spouses, children or siblings & their respective spouses, regardless of where they reside) & household members, whether or not related.

Nominations will be accepted from individuals, age 13 or older, who are legal residents of, and physically reside in, the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia (“Nominators”); any Nominator from Canada (excluding Quebec where the Contest is void), must be at least age of majority in his/her province of primary residence.

Void in Quebec, and where prohibited. This Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, provincial, and local laws.

How To Submit a Nomination:  Visit the Professor Toilet Blog http://www.professortoilet.com/ between 12:00:01 a.m. Eastern Time (“ET”) on 10/30/14 and 11:59:59 p.m. ET on 11/14/14 (“Nomination Period”) to see the complete instructions to prepare and send your nomination(s) via the Instagram app. Entrants who prefer to make a nomination  without using  an Instagram account may enter via email by submitting their entry to thankyoutoilet@americanstandard.com.  Each nomination/entry must include one (1) photograph of existing facilities (“Photo”) and  a short nomination caption, in English not to exceed 50 words, (“Caption”), explaining:

    1. How the Nominee (individual or organization) has had a positive impact on others on a personal/community level;
    2. Why the Nominee (individual or organization) would benefit from and is deserving of receiving up to a maximum of 10 new toilets (outdated facilities which need renovating, etc.)

IMPORTANT:  For any entry/nomination made via Instagram, the Caption must include the hashtag “#ThankYouToiletContest” and tag American Standard at “@American_Standard”.  Failure to include this information may make it impossible to find and judge your entry.

If submitting via email, Photo must be submitted as a JPEG or PNG, cannot exceed 1 MB, and must have a minimum dimension of 200 X 200 pixels.  For submissions via Instagram, the photo must be in a format supported by that platform.

Both the Caption and Photo will be collectively referred to herein as the “Entry” and the Nominee may be referred to as the “Entrant”.  Email to the above address, or posting via Instagram as described above, are the only accepted methods to submit an Entry.   Any other form will be rejected.   Sponsor’s database computer is the official timekeeping device for the Contest.  Proof of submission is not proof of receipt.

Entry Requirements:   All Entries must: 1) Be the original creation of the Nominator; 2) Not have won any type of previous recognition awards (regardless of compensation); 3) Not have been previously published or produced in any fashion (regardless of compensation); 4) Not infringe on any third-party rights; 5) Be suitable for publication as determined at the sole and absolute discretion of the Sponsor; 6) Not include, obscenity, profanity, racist themes or material that is sexually oriented or comments regarding sexual orientation, explicit, suggestive or exploits people in a sexual or violent manner; 7) Not feature any other individual or organization in the photo or Caption other than Nominee; 8) Not contain other brands’ name, labels or logos; and 9) Be factually correct and reflect the author’s truthful and honest opinions and experiences regarding the Nominee.  All facts are subject to investigation and verification by Sponsor.  Any Entry deemed inappropriate for any reason, as determined at the sole and absolute discretion of the Sponsor, will not be considered. Modification of an existing work does not qualify as original. In order to be entered into the Contest, Nominee and Nominator must both comply with the Entry instructions and each Entry submitted must meet the eligibility criteria outlined above. Once submitted, an Entry cannot be deleted, canceled, or modified.

Each Nominator represents and warrants that he/she has obtained permission from the Nominee and any and all recognizable persons named or depicted in the Entry – including but not limited to permission for posting online via social media or otherwise –  and agrees, upon request, to furnish written proof of such permission.  Failure to meet any of the requirements above, or to otherwise comply with these Official Rules, may result in disqualification.  All Nominators and Nominees are subject to background checks to confirm eligibility and suitability for participation in this Contest.  Upon request, any Nominator or Nominee may be required to provide a signed declaration or affidavit confirming eligibility, answering any questions, and consenting to detailed background checking to the fullest extent permitted under applicable law.  Failure to comply when requested may result in disqualification.

Nominees may be nominated more than once, and a Nominator may nominate herself if she wishes to do so.  Entries will not be acknowledged or returned. Enter as often as you wish, but each Entry must be distinctly different and unique. The name of the “authorized account holder” associated with any given email address (including the email address associated with an Instagram account for Entries submitted via Instagram) will be deemed to be the submitter of any Entry and must comply with these Official Rules.  The authorized account holder is defined as the natural person who is assigned an email address by an Internet access provider, an online service provider, or another organization that is responsible for assigning email addresses or the domain associated with the submitted email address.

Usage Rights in Entries:  Sponsor and its designees shall have the unrestricted and non-exclusive right to edit, adapt, publish, copy, display, perform, broadcast, modify, and otherwise use any or all entry materials, alone or in combination with other material in any and all media, whether now known or later discovered, in perpetuity, without restriction of any kind whatsoever, without further compensation to the entrant or anyone else.  Without limiting the foregoing, emailed Entries may be posted online for public viewing in the Contest.   Sponsor reserves the right to review any such Entry prior to any such posting, to remove any Entry at any time after posting, and to remove any incidental material that could be deemed infringing where doing so would not materially alter the Entry and where the entrant otherwise clearly intended to comply with these Official Rules, as determined by Sponsor.  No guarantee is made that any particular emailed Entry will or will not be posted or removed, or as to the length of time between submission and posting.  Sponsor reserves the right, in its absolute discretion, to determine if any particular emailed Entry is appropriate for posting. All Entries that are uploaded and made available for viewing by the general public will be deemed posted at the direction of the entrant within the meaning of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Communications Decency Act.  Potential winners may be required to assign all rights in entry to Sponsor without additional compensation.  Entries submitted via Instagram will become visible to public via the Instagram platform and are subject to the usage terms of that platform.

Data: All information you submit to Sponsor is subject to Sponsor’s privacy policy posted at http://www.americanstandard-us.com/legal.aspx.   Content posted via Instagram is also subject to Instagram’s terms of use and privacy policy.    FOR CANADA:   All information submitted directly to Sponsor via email by or about anyone in Canada will be used solely for the purpose of administering this Contest unless the relevant person(s) otherwise agree or as required by law.

Winner Selection and Notification:  Entries will be judged by a panel of judges, to select one (1) winner, based on the following criteria:  Nominee’s positive impact on personal/community level; Nominee’s need; sincerity and believability of Photo/Caption; compelling nature of Photo/Caption; and Quality of expression of Photo/Caption.  Judges’ decisions are final and binding.    The potential winner will be selected and contacted on or about November 19, 2014, using contact information furnished with the Entry (via Instagram messaging for any Entry submitted via Instagram).   The potential winner must respond to the notification within five (5) days with all requested information to confirm eligibility and to arrange for delivery of prize.  Potential winner may be required to execute and return an affidavit of eligibility, release of liability, and except where prohibited, publicity release within five (5) days of notification. Noncompliance with this time period may result in disqualification and award of prize to an alternate winner.   If potential Winner cannot be reached, is found to be ineligible, cannot or does not comply with these Official Rules, or if any prize or prize notification is returned as undeliverable, potential Winner will be disqualified and prize may be awarded to an alternate winner.  If any eligible winner is deemed a minor under the laws of his or her state or province of residence, any necessary prize claim documents must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Prize:  One (1) Grand Prize is available:   Up to 10 toilets to help meet the winner’s need as expressed in the winning Entry, plus USD $200 with each toilet, which the winner can apply toward installation costs or any other purpose. Maximum value USD $12,000. Selection of toilets is in Sponsor’s discretion. Installation services are not included and are the responsibility of the winner to arrange. All taxes and other expenses, costs or fees associated with the acceptance and/or use of the prize are the responsibility of the winner. Prize cannot be transferred by winner or redeemed for cash.  Each prize will be awarded “as is” with standard manufacturer warranties and guarantees.

General Conditions: By entering the Contest, each Nominator and Nominee (collectively “Participants”) agrees for him/her/itself and all heirs, executors, administrators (a) to release and hold harmless the Released Parties and Instagram from any liability, illness, injury, death, loss, litigation, or damage that may occur, directly or indirectly, whether caused by negligence or not from participation in the Contest and/or acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize or any portion thereto; (b) to indemnify Released Parties from any and all liability resulting or arising from the  Contest;  (c) if selected as a Winner, to the posting of such Entrant’s name online and the use by Released Parties of such Winner’s name, voice, image, and/or likeness for publicity, promotional, and advertising purposes in any and all media now or hereafter known, throughout the world in perpetuity, without additional compensation, notification, permission, or approval, and, upon request, to the giving of consent, in writing, to such use, except where prohibited by law; and (d) to be bound by these Official Rules and to waive any right to claim any ambiguity or error therein or in the Contest itself, and to be bound by all decisions of the Contest judges, which are binding and final. Failure to comply with these conditions may result in disqualification from the Contest at Sponsor’s sole discretion. Sponsor reserves the right to modify these Official Rules for clarification purposes without materially affecting the terms and conditions of the Contest.

Additional Terms:  Sponsor reserves the right to permanently disqualify from any promotion any person it believes has intentionally violated these Official Rules. Any attempt to deliberately damage the Contest or the operation thereof is unlawful and subject to legal action by Sponsors, who may seek damages to the fullest extent permitted by law. The failure of Sponsor to comply with any provision of these Official Rules due to an act of God, hurricane, war, fire, riot, earthquake, terrorism, act of public enemies, actions of governmental authorities outside of the control of the Sponsor (excepting compliance with applicable codes and regulation) or other “force majeure” event will not be considered a breach of these Official Rules. Released Parties assume no responsibility for any injury or damage to entrants’ or any other person’s computer relating to or resulting from entering or downloading materials or software in connection with the Contest. Released Parties are not responsible for telecommunications, network, electronic, technical, or computer failures of any kind, for inaccurate transcription of entry information, for errors in any promotional or marketing materials in these Official Rules, for any human or electronic error, or for Entries that are stolen, misdirected, garbled, delayed, lost, late, damaged or returned.  Sponsor reserves the right to modify, extend, suspend, or terminate the Contest, in whole or in part, if it determines, in its sole discretion, that the Contest is technically impaired or corrupted or that fraud or technical problems, failures or malfunctions or other unintended circumstances have impaired the integrity, administration, security, proper administration of the Contest as contemplated herein.  If the Contest is terminated before the designated end date, Sponsor will (if possible) select the winner from among the Entries received unaffected by the problem.   Sponsor may prohibit any Participant or potential Participant from participating in the Contest, if such person or entity shows a disregard for these Official Rules; acts with an intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any other entrant, Sponsor, or Sponsor agent or representatives; or behaves in any other disruptive manner (as determined by the Sponsor in sole discretion). Sponsor reserves the right to modify these rules for clarification purposes without materially affecting the terms and conditions of the Contest.


WINNER NAME: The winner’s name will be published on www.ProfessorToilet.com and www.instagram.com/american_standard on or about 11/19/2014.

I would like to nominate the Red Cross Shelter in Levittown, PA. Right now there is a promotion going on called Buck up…collecting bucks for the bus transport and to remodel the bathrooms at the shelter. If they were to win these toilets, some money could be used for other things the shelter needs. there are a lot of children that are homeless in bucks county and the shelter is very helpful
